Endotracheal tubes are supplied in two
diameters (7.5 and 8.0 mm). They are commonly used for oral-tracheal
intubation, but may be used to maintain a good airway through an emergency
cricothyroidotomy site, or tracheostomy site. Once in place, the balloon
tip is inflated with just enough air to secure the tube from leaking, but
not so much as to put pressure on the inside of the trachea.
The stylet is threaded through the endotracheal tube to stiffen the
tube and allow it to be bent to a more advantageous angle, if needed for
intubation.
-
It may be bent into a variety of shapes and used as a wound probe,
finger splint, IV bag hanger, retractor, and mine detector (in sandy
soil)
The syringe is used to inflate the balloon tip of the ET tube.
-
It may also be used as a wound irrigator, eye washer, ear washer,
tourniquet windlass, emergency cricothyroidotomy tube, and finger
splint.
