Cefixime (Suprax)

Description:

  • Cephalosporin, Third Generation

Indications:

  • Uncomplicated urinary tract infections (E. coli and P. mirabilis)

  • Otitis media (H. influenzae, Moraxella catarrhalis, S. pyogenes)

  • Pharyngitis and tonsillitis (S. pyogenes)

  • Acute bronchitis (S. pneumoniae, H. influenzae)

  • Uncomplicated gonorrhea (N. gonorrhoeae)

Contraindications:

  • Cross sensitivity with penicillin allergies

Precautions:

  • Pregnancy category B

  • Use with caution in patients with penicillin allergy (5-10% chance of cross-reactivity)

  • Dosage modifications are generally only required in patients with severe renal impairment

  • Counsel patient to finish all medication to prevent development of resistance

Adverse Reactions (Side Effects):

  • Hypersensitivity reactions

  • Gastrointestinal: nausea, vomiting, diarrhea

  • Vaginitis

Dosage:

  • Administered orally (tablets and suspension)

  • Adults and Children (> 5o kg or > 12 years):

    • 400mg per day as a single dose or 200mg every 12 hours

  • Children

    • 8mg/kg/day as a single dose or 4mg/kg/day every 12 hours

    • For oral suspension: room temperature, shake well, good for 10 days only
