Description:

  • Mydriatic, cycloplegic

Indications:

  • Uveitis

  • Iritis

  • Mydriatic

  • Cycloplegic for refraction

Contraindications:

  • Adhesions between the iris and lens

  • Primary glaucoma, narrow anterior chamber angle

Precautions:

  • Pregnancy category C; compatible with breastfeeding

  • Elderly, small children, and infants

Adverse Reactions (Side Effects):

  • CNS: confusion fever, headache, somnolence, visual hallucinations

  • CV: tachycardia, vasodilation

  • EENT: blurred vision, edema, increased intraocular pressure, photophobia

  • GI: abdominal distension in infants, decreased GI motility, dry mouth

  • GU: urinary retention

  • SKIN: dry skin, rash

Dosage:

Administered as an ophthalmic solution

  • Adult and Child: 

    • INSTILL 1 drop; repeat in 5-10 minutes for refraction or every 3-4 hours for uveitis

    • patients with heavily pigmented irides may require larger doses

    • use only 2% strength in children and compress the lacrimal sac for several minutes following administration
