Fluocinonide (Lidex)

Category:

Description:

  • Topical, high potency corticosteroid

Indications:

  • Psoriasis

  • Eczema, contact dermatitis

  • Pruritis of corticosteroid responsive dermatoses

Contraindications:

  • Fungal infections

  • Use on face, groin, or axilla

Precautions:

  • Pregnancy category C; unknown if sufficient systemic absorption to produce detectable amounts in breast milk

  • Viral infections

  • Bacterial infections

  • Children  

Adverse Reactions (Side Effects):

  • SKIN: acne, allergic contact dermatitis, atrophy, burning, dryness, folliculitis, hypertrichosis, hypopigmentation, irritation, itching, miliaria, perioral dermatitis, secondary infection, striae

  • MISC: systemic absorption of topical corticosteroids has produced reversible HPA axis suppression (more likely with occlusive dressings, prolonged administration, application to large surface areas, liver failure, and in children

 

Dosage:

  • Administered topically (cream, ointment, gel, solution)

  • Adult and Child: TOP apply to affected area 2-3 times daily, rub completely into skin

Special considerations:

  • Avoid contact with eyes

  • Do not use on weeping, denuded, or infected areas

  • Do not put bandages or dressings over treated area unless absolutely necessary

  • Discontinue if local irritaion or fever develops
