Thalassemia is characterized by an abnormal hemoglobin that is unusually
fragile. The most common form of this is alpha-thalassemia minor, with an
increase in hemoglobin A2. While this rarely is associated with clinical
illness, it can have significance during pregnancy. Hemoglobin
electrophoresis showing elevated levels of hemoglobin A2 confirms
thalassemia. |

*These are general values taken from a variety of
sources. The actual normal values may vary from lab to lab and from one
type of testing protocol to another.
